Party Ideas

If you want to throw a party that’s a bit different from everyone else’s, the first thing to do, of course, is to book your party magician. Once you’ve booked Iain, you can relax in the knowledge that the entertainment is sorted.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the tried-and-tested formula of standing or sitting around, eating canapés, drinking and chatting. Particularly with a magician there to bring variety and to ensure everybody mixes in, this type of party is very enjoyable. It wouldn’t be so popular otherwise.

However, if you feel inclined to take your party to the next level, you could consider giving it a theme or at least decorating your house (or the venue) with banners, accessories and favours.

Here are a few ideas for party themes you might enjoy and which magic will complement particularly well. You can buy cool and interesting decorations and accessories from PartyBox to help you create the right atmosphere.

Party Themes

Magic

If you and your friends enjoy doing magic yourselves, you could host a magic party. You could each learn one or two tricks and show them to one another. You could take this quite seriously and construct a little performance area, with curtains around it and seats for the audience, or you could pitch it more as just a bit of fun, allowing practical jokes and bar bets to pass as magic.

You can decorate your house with optical illusions, signs of the zodiac, gambling casino confetti, giant playing cards, glow-in-the-dark stars…

If you invite Iain to entertain you as well, he will be happy to teach you a few simple tricks to expand your repertoire.

Hallowe’en / Witches and Wizards

At Hallowe’en, or at any time you feel inspired to, you could have a spooky party. You can really go to town with the decoration: spiders’ webs; bats; ghosts; pumpkins; broomsticks; eyeballs, fangs and skeletons that glow in the dark. There are great costumes to wear: old-fashioned witch, glamorous witch, traditional wizard, vampire, ghost, devil… Think horror, think Harry Potter, think Addams Family.

You can make evil-looking, evil-feeling food and disguise the drink as blood. The scope is practically endless; you can really ham it up.

In these circumstances, magic blends in perfectly. You might even wish to ask Iain to do a short spot of cabaret magic, which you all sit and watch, as well as close-up magic. Mentalism (magic mindreading) is also well suited to spooky occasions.

James Bond

If you want something sophisticated that will give your guests the opportunity to dress up glamorously, a James Bond theme could be the answer. As well as drinking martini (shaken, not stirred), you could:

• do target-practice with rubber band guns or peashooters
• have a James Bond quiz to test your knowledge of the books and films
• sing along to the theme songs, karaoke-style
• spend part of the evening solving a murder mystery (from a box)
• have a ‘fun’ casino.

Casino / Gambling

With or without the James Bond aspect, gambling with fake money is a great way to enjoy the thrill of a flutter without any risk whatsoever. You can hire a ‘fun’ casino or you can arrange your own games. There is roulette, pontoon/blackjack, poker, craps, wheel of fortune… loads of different challenges for the punters…

… and an ideal setting for magic.
Card tricks are a well known staple of magic – and many have a gambling theme. Iain also does tricks with coins, banknotes, poker chips, lottery tickets and dice.

Let Iain know in advance if your party is to have a theme, so he can be sure to do magic that’s in keeping with it.
